Sophomore 3B Ashley Bilodeau (Manchester, CT) batted 4 for 7 with five RBI and three runs as Assumption College swept UMass Lowell, 14-8 and 3-0, Saturday in a Northeast-10 Conference softball twin bill at River View Field.
The loss extended UMass Lowell’s winless streak to 15 games as it slipped to 1-13-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the NE-10 entering Sunday’s clash at Bentley (12:00).
The Greyhounds improved to 8-10 overall and 2-0 in the Conference and hosts Merrimack Sunday at 1:00.
Senior CF Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA) led UMass Lowell as she hit 1 for 5 with a three-run shot in the first game as well as three walks in the nightcap. Junior 2B Katie Hebert (Lowell, MA) batted 2 for 6 with two walks.
In the opener, Bilodeau batted 2 for 4 with five RBI, including a grand slam in the second inning which gave the Greyhounds a 5-0 lead. Sophomore SS Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, MA) batted 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs while sophomore 1B Amy Gordon (Seekonk, MA) went 2 for 5 with one run and one RBI.
UMass Lowell bounced back in the bottom of the second with seven runs, highlighted by a three-run shot from Lajoie and a two-run single by sophomore SS Stephanie Rollo (Dracut, MA).
Assumption responded with five runs in the fifth, led by an RBI single by junior pinch hitter Kara Lyons (Dracut, MA) and a two-run single by Palumbo. The Greyhounds added four more in the seventh, highlighted by an RBI double by Gordon and RBI singles from Bilodeau and junior CF Meghan DiVitto (Milford, MA).
Freshman P Casey Halajian (Quincy, MA) earned the win (1-4) as she came on in the second inning and allowed four hits, two runs (earned) and a walk while striking out one.
Sophomore P Nicole Monroe (Townsend, MA) took the loss (0-3) as she surrendered nine hits, nine runs (five earned) and three walks while striking out four.
In the nightcap, Assumption jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sac fly by freshman DH Caitlin Clary (Belmont, NH), which scored Gordon.
The Greyhounds doubled their lead in the fourth when Bilodeau scored on a wild pitch; and added one more in the seventh behind an RBI double by Palumbo.
UMass Lowell stranded 10 runners and had the bases loaded with one out in the fifth, but was unable to capitalize. Hebert batted 2 for 3 with a walk while sophomore LF Hannah May (Hardwick, MA) went 1 for 2.
Bilodeau batted 2 for 3 for the Greyhounds.
Freshman P Jennifer Lowery (Assonet, MA) improved to 5-1 as she scattered three hits and six walks while striking out eight.
Freshman Marissa Fiorentino (Tewksbury, MA) took the loss, slipping to 0-4. Fiorentino allowed six hits, three walks and three earned runs while striking out six.
