Senior CF Kate Theodorou (Glen Cove, NY) batted 3 for 6 with four RBI as Saint Anselm defeated UMass Lowell, 8-2, and salvaged a 7-7 draw in the nightcap Wednesday in a Northeast-10 Conference softball twin bill at River View Field.
The results leave the River Hawks in search of their first victory as they slipped to 0-11-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the NE-10 entering Saturday’s home doubleheader against Assumption (1:00). Saint Anselm improved to 9-8-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Conference and visit Southern Connecticut Saturday at 1:00.
Freshman Elyssa Boris (Gardner, MA) led UMass Lowell, hitting a combined 3 for 7 with four RBI. Sophomore SS Stephanie Rollo (Dracut, MA) went 3 for 4 while sophomore DH Hilary Hopkins (Poway, CA) came off the bench to go 2 for 3 with a run.
Senior C Brittany Birch (Bradford, MA) batted 1 for 3 with five walks, four runs and three RBI for Saint Anselm.
In the opener, UMass Lowell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Hawks scored eight unanswered runs the rest of the way en route to the win.
Saint Anselm knotted the score in the second behind a two-run single by Theodorou and added three runs in the fourth, capitalizing on a walk with the bases loaded, a wild pitch and an error.
The Hawks added two more in the seventh behind an RBI double by Theodorou and a sac fly by freshman 1B Morgan Murphy (Orange, MA). Boris took the loss for UMass Lowell as she slipped to 0-6.
Junior P Megan Lemire (Worcester, MA) improved to 6-2 as she scattered six hits, two earned runs and three walks while striking out three.
In the nightcap, Saint Anselm battled back from a 7-4 deficit with three runs in the sixth inning to knot the score at 7-7, which would hold firm. Birch started the rally as she drew a walk to score junior SS Liz Lebrun (Rowley, MA) while Theodorou followed with an RBI single and sophomore DH Kayla McEachern (Stoneham, MA) a sac fly to even the score.
The River Hawks went down in order in the bottom of the sixth before the umpires ruled the game official due to darkness.
UMass Lowell jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first behind a two-run triple by Boris and an RBI single from freshman C Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA).
The Hawks took a 4-3 lead in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single by Birch, but the River Hawks came back in the bottom half, capitalizing on a wild pitch, an error and an RBI double by Boris.
Freshman P Marissa Fiorentino (Tewksbury, MA) went five innings and allowed four hits, seven runs (four earned) and seven walks while striking out five.
Junior P Lisa Caruso (Granby, CT) went 3.1 innings for Saint Anselm, giving up four hits, six runs (two earned) and three walks while striking out one.
