LOWELL, Mass. – Felix Martinez (Miami, Fla.) singled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th as UMass Lowell completed its come-from-behind win to defeat Stonehill, 2-1, Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 action at LeLacheur Park.
The River Hawks have won eight straight and improve to 11-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Stonehill has dropped six straight and fall to 7-10 overall and 0-4 against the league with the loss.
UMass Lowell rallied with single runs in the ninth and 10th innings for the win. The River Hawks had two runs on seven hits. The Skyhawks had one run on five hits.
Stonehill got on the board first in the top of the fifth inning on one hit and one walk. Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn.) opened the frame with a walk. Three batters later he came around to scored on a run-scoring double from Nick Nardacci (Glenmont, N.Y.).
The River Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the ninth on two walks, a hit and a sacrifice fly. Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Taylor von Kriegenberg (Stoneham, Mass.) each drew walks. In between the two free passes T.J. Leary (Dracut, Mass.) doubled.
The bases were loaded with no outs. Senior third basemen Tim Keene (Berlin, N.H.) drove in the run with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The River Hawks were unable to get another run across and the game went to extra innings. UML wasted little time scoring in the 10th. Leadoff man Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) singled to open the inning and advanced to second on a balk.
Martinez, who entered the game in the eighth as a pinch-runner, singled down the left field line plating Jacobs for the winning run.
Freshman right hander Dallas Nunes (Easton, Mass.) picked up the win for UML. He got the final two outs in the 10th.
UML starter Ted Haley (Cranston, R.I.) worked eight solid innings allowing just one run on three hits. He struck out nine and walked just two.
Matt Guisti (Hopkinton, Mass.) pitched a complete game for Stonehill working into the 10th inning, but took the loss. He allowed two runs on seven hits in nine innings. He did not record an out in the 10th. Guisti struck out seven and walked two.
The two teams meet again Thursday afternoon at Stonehill. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
