Junior SS J.T. Leary (Newburyport, MA) batted 3 for 6 with two runs, two walks and one RBI while freshman RF Matt Jacobs (Hudson, MA) went 2 for 4 with three RBI, three walks and a run as UMass Lowell swept the University of New Haven, 4-3 and 9-5, Saturday in a Northeast-10 Conference twin bill at the Santaluces Sportsplex.
With the victories, UMass Lowell increased its winning streak to seven games entering Tuesday’s home opener against Stonehill (3:00). New Haven slipped to 3-7 overall and 0-3 in the NE-10.
The streak is UMass Lowell’s longest since the 2007 season and its best showing in Florida (8-2) in Head Coach Ken Harring’s five-year tenure.
In the opener, junior C Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, MA) led off with a double and Jacobs followed with a single to score sophomore Connor Burnham (Harwich, MA), who pinch ran for Notargiacomo, for the winner.
The River Hawks took a 3-1 lead in the fifth behind an RBI single by freshman Pat Devlin (Dracut, MA) and an RBI double from junior 1B Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, MA).
The Chargers, however, pulled one back in the fifth on a sac fly by freshman LF Kyle Pettoruto; and tied the score in the top of the ninth when freshman pinch runner Stephen Clout scored on a wild pitch.
Leary led UMass Lowell, hitting 2 for 2 with one RBI, one run and a walk while Notargiacomo went 2 for 4 and Devlin 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI.
Senior 2B Evan Okon led New Haven, hitting 2 for 3 with one run.
Sophomore P Dan White (Southboro, MA) earned his first win of the year as he replaced sophomore Dustin Ramey (Kingston, NH) in the seventh inning and allowed two hits, one earned run and a walk while striking out one. Ramey scattered three hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks while striking out four.
Senior Kyle Bombace (0-1) took the loss as he allowed two hits, one earned run and no walks while striking out one.
In the nightcap, junior CF Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, NY) batted 2 for 2 with three RBI, one run and a walk while Jacobs hit 1 for 1 with three walks and two RBI to lead UMass Lowell.
Senior 3B Tim Keene (Berlin, NH) batted 2 for 5 with two runs.
The River Hawks scored three runs in the third inning behind a sac fly by Wallace and added two more in the fifth behind a sac fly by Notargiacomo and an RBI single from Wallace.
Jacobs hit a two-run single in the seventh and Devlin scored on a wild pitch for a 9-3 cushion after eight innings.
New Haven, however, pulled two back in the ninth when sophomore Tom Rombilus had an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch.
Freshman Ryan Stoller (Milton, MA) earned his first collegiate win as he allowed three hits, two runs (earned) and two walks while striking out three after coming on for freshman Jack Leathersich (Beverly, MA) in the sixth. Leathersich yielded two hits, three runs (two earned) and four walks while striking out six over the first five innings.
Sophomore Mitch Rossi took the loss as he allowed three hits, two earned runs and two walks while striking out one in 2.1 innings.
