Freshman Pat Devlin (Dracut, MA) batted 3 for 4 with two runs and a solo home run as UMass Lowell defeated the University of New Haven, 6-5, Friday in the Northeast-10 Conference opener at the Santaluces Sportsplex.
The win was the fifth straight for the River Hawks, who improved to 8-3 overall – 6-2 in Florida – and 1-0 in the NE-10 entering tomorrow’s twin bill with the Chargers (11:00) at the Sportsplex. New Haven slipped to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the Conference.
Sophomore DH Sean Burns (Colchester, VT) batted 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI while freshman RF Matt Jacobs (Hudson, MA) went 2 for 4 with one RBI.
Senior C Jimmy Rivas led New Haven, hitting 2 for 4 with two RBI and one run while senior 2B Evan Okon went 2 for 4 with two runs and senior SS Kyle Bombace 2 for 4 with one run.
Sophomore P Ted Haley (Cranston, RI) improved to 2-0 with the win as he came on in the seventh and allowed one hit and retired four of five batters. Freshman P Dallas Nunes (Easton, MA) picked up his fourth save as he retired three of four batters in the ninth.
Sophomore Kyle Davis (Rochester, NH) stared the game and went 5.2 innings, scattering seven hits, five runs (four earned) and a walk while striking out two.
Junior P T.J. Phelan took the loss (0-3) as he surrendered 10 hits, six runs (five earned) and two walks while striking out six in 7.1 innings.
The River Hawks erupted for four runs in the first inning, ignited by Devlin who led off with a solo shot. Junior CF Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, NY) later singled and advanced to third on an error, driving in senior 3B Tim Keene (Berlin, NH), who doubled and Burns, who singled.
Junior C Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, MA) followed with a sac fly to score Wallace. New Haven pulled one back in the bottom half of the inning when Okon reached on an error and scored on a double by Rivas.
The River Hawks took a 5-1 lead in the top of the second behind an RBI single by Burns, who drove in Devlin.
The Chargers rallied for four runs in the sixth behind RBI singles by Rivas and freshman DH Ryan Pettoruto. Freshman 1B Cory Carr later followed with a two-run single to knot the score.
UMass Lowell scored the game-winner in the eighth when Notargiacomo doubled and later scored on a single by Jacobs.
