March 17, 2009

Box Score

Junior C Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, MA) had a two-run single in the seventh inning and junior Matt Monico (Tewksbury, MA) earned his first win as UMass Lowell defeated Florida Tech, 3-0, Tuesday in a non-conference baseball clash at Seminick-Hall Field.

The victory was UMass Lowell’s fourth straight as it improved to 7-3 entering Wednesday’s game at No. 20 Lynn University (12:00). Florida Tech, receiving votes in the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Top 30 Poll, slipped to 17-10.

Monico allowed six hits and three walks while striking out two over eight innings, improving to 1-0.

The loss spoiled a stellar effort by freshman P David Mueller, who limited the River Hawks to three hits, two unearned runs and a walk while striking out seven in eight innings.

Notargiacomo batted 1 for 3 and broke the scoreless drought when he singled up the middle with the bases loaded to score senior 3B Tim Keene (Berlin, NH) and junior 1B Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, MA).

von Kriegenbergh had singled and reached second on a fielder’s choice bunt by Keene. Freshman RF Matt Jacobs (Hudson, MA) was then hit by a pitch to set up Notargiacomo’s heroics.

The River Hawks added a third run in the ninth when von Kriegenbergh walked and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Keene. Junior CF Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, NY) then doubled to right center to score von Kriegenbergh.

Freshman P Dallas Nunes (Easton, MA) retired the side in the ninth to pick up his third save.

Florida Tech had runners on second and third in the seventh inning, but was unable to capitalize. Junior LF Tony Moos and senior RF Tyler Wright each batted 2 for 4 to lead the Panthers.
