Caldwell College capitalized on two errors and scored four runs in the first inning en route to a 5-1 victory over UMass Lowell Monday at the Rebel Spring Softball Games in Kissimmee, FL.
The loss extended UMass Lowell’s losing skid to four to open the season. Earlier Monday, the River Hawks suffered an 8-1 loss to Southwest Minnesota.
Caldwell improved to 2-3.
Junior Danielle Genovese cracked an RBI double in the first inning and junior Kyrie Timbrook reached first on a throwing error with two on to highlight the rally.
UMass Lowell added one run in the sixth when junior Katie Hebert (Lowell, MA) hit a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield to score senior Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA), who had reached earlier on an error.
Freshmen Meagan Guy (Berlin, CT), Paula Ruszkowski (Reading, MA) and Nikko Tremblay (Merrimack, NH) each had hits for UMass Lowell.
Freshman P Kaitlynn McFarlane earned the win as she allowed three hits, no walks and an unearned run while striking out one.
Freshman P Elissa Boris (Gardner, MA) took the loss as she surrendered eight hits, three walks and five runs (one earned) while striking out two.
The River Hawks are idle Tuesday and return Wednesday against Minnesota-Duluth (1:00) and Minnesota State-Moorhead (3:00).
