UMass Lowell suffered a 9-2 loss to Adelphi followed by a 5-0 setback to No. 19 Central Missouri in its season openers at the Rebel Spring Softball Games Sunday in Kissimmee, FL.
UMass Lowell slipped to 0-2 and meets Southwest Minnesota (9:00) and Caldwell (1:00) Monday.
In the opener, Adelphi erupted for seven runs in the first two innings en route to the win. The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning behind RBI singles by junior Katie Brophy and sophomore Stephanie Byster.
In the second inning, Adelphi scored five runs, highlighted by a three-run home run by senior Jessica Vogt.
UMass Lowell pulled two back in the fifth inning, led by RBI singles by freshman Nikko Tremblay (Merrimack, NH) and senior Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA), but could muster no closer.
Lajoie batted 3 for 4 (singles) while Tremblay went 2 for 3. Freshman P Marissa Fiorentino (Tewksbury, MA) took the loss, scattering nine hits, seven runs (five earned), two walks and two strikeouts in 3.0 innings.
Sophomore P Marisa Romeo earned the win as she allowed seven hits, two runs and two walks while striking out one.
In the second game, Central Missouri scored one run in the fourth and four in the sixth en route to the victory. Sophomore Kelli Kurka doubled home junior Tarese Ely-Myers for a 1-0 lead in the fourth and highlighted the sixth inning with a three-run shot.
Senior P Megan Leonard struck out 15, walked five and allowed one hit to earn the win.
Freshman P Elissa Boris (Gardner, MA) took the loss, allowing two hits, three walks and no earned runs while striking out two over 5.0 innings.
Freshman Caelyn Ford (Dracut, MA) led the UMass Lowell bats, hitting 1 for 2 with a single, walk and stolen base.
