BURLINGTON, Vt. (Mar. 14, 2009) – Scott Campbell (Navan, Ont.) scored the final two goals of the game for the River Hawks as fifth-seeded UMass Lowell eliminated fourth-seeded Vermont with a 4-2 win Saturday night in Game 2 of the Hockey East Quarterfinals at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
The River Hawks have won four straight and improve to 19-15-2 on the season. UML is unbeaten in nine of its last 10 road games and advances to the Hockey East semifinals for the first time since 2002.
The Catamounts have lost three straight and fall to 20-11-5.
Campbell had a game-high three points on two goals and one assist. He earned a second period assist and scored two goals – the game-winner and the empty netter to seal the win – in the third period.
Senior captain Mark Roebothan (St. John’s, Nfld.) picked up his fourth multi-point game of the year with two assists.
Viktor Stalberg (Gothenburg, Sweden) had two points on a goal and an assist to lead the Catamounts offensively.
For the second straight night Vermont opened the scoring. Stalberg got the goal just 59 seconds into the game on UVM’s first power play of the night.
The River Hawks responded with the next three goals of the game. Chris Auger (Belleville, Ont.) got UML’s first goal at 8:12 of the first period.
Mike Potacco (Kinnelon, N.J.) put the River Hawks up for the first time with his eighth goal of the season at 15:03 of the second. Roebothan and Campbell picked up the assists.
Campbell figured into each of the final three goals of the night for UMass Lowell. He assisted on Potacco’s tally and scored the final two of the night for the River Hawks.
He scored the first of his two goals at 10:29 on the power play – UML’s second power play marker of the contest.
Justin Milo (Edina, Minn.) brought the Catamounts within a goal – at 3-2 – but that was as close as they would get.
Campbell iced the game with an empty net goal, his 13th of the year, at 19:12 of the third. Roebothan and Jeremy Dehner (Madison, Wis.) assisted on the final goal.
UML’s CPR Line – Campbell, Roebothan and Potacco – combined for six points on the night (3 goals, 3 assists).
Nevin Hamilton (Ashland, Mass.) stopped 22 of the 24 shots he faced to earn the win. It was his first career playoff start. He improved to 10-6-1 on the season.
Rob Madore (Venetia, Pa.) made 18 saves, but took the loss for UVM. He is 13-9-4 on the year.
Vermont held the edge in shots in two of the three periods and in the game 24 to 22.
The River Hawks were 2-for-4 on the power play. They have nine power play goals in the last four games. It was the 11th time this year UML scored multiple power play goals in a game this year; they are 11-0-0 in those games.
UML was 5-for-6 on the penalty kill in the game, killing the final five UVM power plays.
The sweep of UVM is UML’s first Quarterfinal sweep since 1997.
