BURLINGTON, Vt. (Mar. 13, 2009) - Maury Edwards (Rocky Rapids, Alta.) scored the game-winning goal with just two seconds remaining in the first overtime as UMass Lowell completed its comeback to earn a 4-3 overtime victory over Vermont in Game 1 of the Hockey East Quarterfinals at the Gutterson Fieldhouse.
The River Hawks have won three straight and take a 1-0 lead in the playoff series. UML is 18-15-2 on the season. The Catamounts fall to 20-10-5 with the loss.
Edwards winning goal was UMass Lowell's second of the night in the final minute of a period. Nick Schaus (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored with 30 seconds remaining in the third period to send the game to overtime.
Schaus' goal was the River Hawks' fourth extra attacker goal of the season and the second at Gutterson Fieldshouse.
Twice Vermont had two goal leads, but could not hold on for the win. Seniors Peter Lenes (Shelburne, Vt.) and Dean Strong (Mississauga, Ont.) scored the first two goals of the game to give UVM a 2-0 just over two minutes into the second period.
Michael Scheu (Buffalo, N.Y.) got the River Hawks on the board to make it a 2-1 game at the 13-minute mark of the second. Scheu has three goals in three games against Vermont this season.
The Catamounts held the 2-1 lead after two periods and scored a third goal early in the third period. Dan Lawson (Oak Forest, Ill.) made it 3-1 with his one-timer goal from the top of the right face off circle at 4:16 of the third.
Five minutes later UVM's Brayden Irwin (Toronto, Ont.) was whistled for a hitting from behind major giving the River Hawks a five-minute power play. At 12:45 Viktor Stalberg (Gothenberg, Sweden) went to the box for tripping and the River Hawks went on a five-on-three.
UML began chipping away at the Vermont lead when freshman David Vallorani (Hamilton, Ont.) scored banging home a cross-crease pass from Jonathan Maniff (Revere, Mass.) at 13:41.
Vallorani figured into the tying goal as well picking up the primary assist on Schaus' tally with just 30 seconds remaining in regulation.
Edwards' OT winner was the 22nd combined shot by the two teams in overtime. The two teams totaled 36 shots through three periods of regulation. UML had 12 shots in the extra session, Vermont had 10.
The goal was Edwards' 11th of the season. He has a team-leading 28 points. The two-point night was Vallorani's eighth multi-point effort of the season.
Wahsontiio Stacey (Kahnawake, Que.) and Drew MacKenzie (New Canaan, Conn.) each had two assists for Vermont.
The Catamounts out-shot the River Hawks 30 to 28 on the night. UMass Lowell was 1-for-6 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. UML has killed 51 of the last 53 power plays against. They have seven power play goals in the last three games.
