AMHERST, Mass. (Feb. 7, 2009) - Mark Roebothan (St. John's, Nfld.) scored the game-winning goal early in the third period to lift UMass Lowell to a 2-1 win over Massachusetts Saturday night in Hockey East action at the Mullins Center.
The River Hawks have won four of five and improve to 13-13-0 overall and 10-9-0 in league play. The Minutemen have lost two straight and fall to 11-14-3 overall and 6-10-3 against the league.
Roebothan broke a 1-1 tie when he collected the rebound off a Jeremy Dehner (Madison, Wis.) wraparound attempt to score the game-winning goal just one minute into the third period. The goal was Roebothan's fourth in the last four games and gave UML its first lead of the game.
Scott Campbell (Navan, Ont.), who won the face off that led to the goal, picked up the second assist on the game-winner.
Sophomore Shawn Saunders, playing in just his fifth game of the season, opened the scoring in the game with a shot from the right slot at the 14:23 mark of the first.
The goal was Saunders' first of the season and assisted by Micahel Lecomte (St. Hyacinthe, Que.) and Chase Langeraap (Cayuga, Ont.), who cycled the puck along the boards before the goal.
Patrick Cey (Saskatoon, Sask.) scored the equalizer at 12:29 of the second period. Ryan Blair (Ashburn, Va.) found Cey cutting down the right wing.
Cey fanned on the initial shot, but gathered his own rebound to score the goal. Maury Edwards (Rocky Rapids, Alta.) had the second assist.
Nevin Hamilton (Ashland, Mass.) made 27 saves to earn his seventh win of the season. Hamilton is 4-2-2 in eight career games against Massachusetts.
Paul Dainton (Fort McMurray, Alta.) stopped 32 shots, but took the loss for the Minutemen. The loss drops his record to 8-9-1.
The River Hawks out-shot the Minutemen, 34-28, recording at least 10 shots in each of the three periods. Neither team scored on the power play. UML was 0-for-6. UMass was 0-for-5.
"The first period was all over the place. I thought we came out pretty well good once again. Then there were a lot of penalties. But we got stronger as the game went on. We did the things you need to do to win games. We made smart decisions with the puck, had great positioning around the ice and really won a lot of little battles. For us to come in here and win two games, it's a real testimony to this team and how well we played."
The River Hawks are next in action Friday night when they travel to Boston College to face the Eagles. BC and UML meet again Saturday night at the Tsongas Arena. The Minutemen are next in action Friday night when they host Northeastern for the first game of the home-and-home with the Huskies.
