Senior F Lauren Hood (Ashland, MA) scored 16 points to lead the University of New Haven over UMass Lowell, 58-48, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s basketball clash at the Costello Athletic Center.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 8-18 overall and 5-16 in the Northeast-10 Conference and will miss out on the 2009 NE-10 Tournament field. Merrimack was an 87-75 overtime winner against Southern Connecticut this afternoon, which sealed the No. 12 and final seed for the NE-10 Tournament.

UMass Lowell will cap the season Tuesday night at Southern New Hampshire (5:30). New Haven improved to 14-12 overall and 9-12 in the Conference and closes the regular season at Merrimack Tuesday at 5:30.

Junior F Jen Valente (Prospect, CT) led the River Hawks with 15 points while senior Revital Carmon (Bat-Yam, Israel) added 10 points and five rebounds, hitting 4 of 6 field goals.

Freshman F Nikki Carroll (Oswego, NY) added 12 points, eight rebounds and five steals for the Chargers, hitting 6 of 9 field goal attempts. Senior G Briiana Rende (Augusta, ME) chipped in 10 points and four assists.

The Chargers mounted advantages from the free throw line (16-9) and on steals (12-5) as well as a 17-11 edge on second chance points.

New Haven led 36-35 five minutes into the second half but used a 10-3 run to post a 46-38 lead with 8:52 left to play. Rende and sophomore G Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty (Newington, CT) led the run with a 3-point bomb apiece.

The River Hawks cut the lead to four (48-44) but New Haven answered with a 10-2 run to post a 58-46 lead with 1:30 remaining and put the game out of reach.
