BURLINGTON, Vt. (Feb. 20, 2009) – Michael Scheu (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored the first two goals of his collegiate career, including the game-tying goal in the final minute of regulation as UMass Lowell and No. 6 Vermont played to a 3-3 tie Friday night in Hockey East action at the Gutterson Fieldhouse.
The River Hawks are 14-13-2 overall and 11-9-2 in league play with the tied. UML has tied two straight games and is unbeaten in six of its last seven road games (4-1-2). The Catamounts are 17-7-5 overall and 12-6-4 in league play. They are unbeaten in four of their last five (3-1-1).
Twice in the game the River Hawks battled back from a goal down. Both times it was Scheu who scored the tying goal and he opened and closed the scoring for UML.
The freshman winger, playing in just his fourth game, opened the scoring for UMass Lowell at the 19:15 mark of the first period. He tied the game for good with just 26 seconds remaining in the third period.
Scott Campbell (Navan, Ont.) also scored for the River Hawks. Campbell has goals in back-to-back games and is the second River Hawk to reach double digits in goals with 10.
Josh Burrows (Prairie Grove, Ill.), Wahsontiio Stacey (Kahnawake, Que.) and Chris Atkinson (Sparta, N.J.) scored for Vermont.
Burrows opened the scoring in the game with his third goal of the season. The goal came at the 8:50 mark of the opening period.
Scheu and Campbell scored the next two goals in the game to put the River Hawks up by a 2-1 score through 40 minutes of play. It was just the ninth time out of 31 games that Vermont trailed after two periods (2-5-2).
The lead held for the River Hawks until the 8:49 mark of the third period when Stacey scored the equalizer. Just under three minutes later (11:40) Atkinson scored the go-ahead goal for the Catamounts.
Trailing by a goal with under a minute to play and with the goaltender pulled, Scheu netted his second of the night to give the River Hawks a tie and a point in the standings. The goal came at 19:34 of the third.
Nevin Hamilton (Ashland, Mass.) stopped 22 of 25 shots faced to pick up the tie between the pipes for UMass Lowell. Hamilton is 8-5-1 and is unbeaten in his last four road starts (3-0-1).
Rob Madore (Venetia, Pa.) made 31 saves in the game, including 12 in the third period, but had to settle for the tie. He is 10-5-4 on the season.
The River Hawks out-shot the Catamounts 34-25 for the game. They held a 15-6 edge in the third period and overtime.
“I don’t think there was any question we were the better team tonight,” said UMass Lowell head coach Blaise MacDonald. “We had plenty of opportunities. Our guys worked very hard. We deserved to score with the goaltender pulled. It was an outstanding effort. We were physical. We moved our feet. The defense played great. It was a great game.”
The River Hawks and Catamounts conclude their weekend series, and the season series, Saturday night at the Gutterson Fieldhouse.
