Greyhounds Weather Late Rally by UMass Lowell, 59-53

Senior G Bethany Plasski scored 14 points as Assumption defeated UMass Lowell, 59-53, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s basketball tilt at the Laska Gymnasium.

With the loss, the River Hawks slipped to 8-16 overall and 5-14 in the NE-10 entering Wednesday’s game at American International (5:30). Assumption improved to 15-9 overall and 13-6 in the Conference.

Junior Jen Valente (Prospect, CT) led the River Hawks with 14 points as she converted 6 of 12 field goal attempts, while senior C Revital Carmon (Bat-Yam, Israel) added 13 points and seven rebounds while shooting 6 for 7 from the floor.

Junior F Kayla Parker chipped in 11 points and six rebounds for Assumption.

The Greyhounds outscored the River Hawks 12-3 from 3-point territory and 15-8 from the free throw line. Assumption converted 4 of 9 chances from long range while UMass Lowell struggled to a 1-17 clip.

The advantages enabled Assumption to compensate for 26 turnovers (20 by UMass Lowell), enabling the River Hawks to post a 25-18 scoring edge off mistakes.

Assumption led 50-38 with 7:33 left in the game, but UMass Lowell rallied to cut the deficit with a 9-2 run to come within five points (52-47) with 5:45 left to play. Carmon scored seven of her points in the run.

The Greyhounds led 56-49 with 3:03 remaining but a jumper by sophomore G Tamaria Menefee (Dorchester, MA) and a layup by Valente brought the River Hawks within three points (56-53) with 1:12 left to play.

Plasski, however, converted 3 of 4 free throws in the final 27 seconds to seal the win.

In the first half, Assumption led 18-17 and scored nine straight points to post a 27-17 cushion with 1:53 left in the half. A trey by junior G Amanda Sheehy capped the run
