Bryan Scales, who recently completed his first year as head coach of the UMass Lowell men’s soccer team, was named the head coach of the New England Revolution Under-16 team, the club announced recently.
Scales is able to coach the Revolution U-16 team simultaneously with his commitments to UMass Lowell. The Revolution U-16 team is in the Northeast Division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy and plays other MLS U-16 teams as well as local clubs such as Greater Boston Bolts, Seacoast United and New England Aztecs.
"We're pleased to add someone of Bryan's reputation to our staff,” said Revolution General Manager Mike Burns, a former U.S. National Team defender. “Bryan's coaching experience at both the collegiate and youth national team level is extremely beneficial to the development of all players involved in the Revolution Youth Development system."
The Revolution’s 30-game schedule opens Dec. 4-8 at the 2009 Development Academy Winter Showcase in Phoenix, AZ, and runs through the winter and spring.
“It is a real privilege to represent UMass Lowell Soccer and be involved with the New England Revolution Academy,” Scales said. “I want to thank Karl Edmonds (Director of Youth Development) for the opportunity to be a part of the premier development program for elite players in New England.
“The U.S. Soccer Development Academy has been a resounding success so far,” he added, “and I know that our players look forward to being challenged each and every week against some of the best teams in the country.”
Scales is also a scout for the U.S. Men’s National Team as well as an assistant coach for with the U.S. U-15 Boys Team.
Scales came to UMass Lowell in April to replace 12-year head coach Ted Priestly. Prior, he was the head coach at Cornell University for 11 seasons.
A 1991 graduate of Hartwick College, Scales was a four-year player for the Hawks and, along with teammate Burns, helped lead them to a 42-25-11 clip which included two NCAA Tournament appearances.
Scales lives in Nashua, NH.
