The No. 5 UMass Lowell River Hawks (11-2, 3-1 NE-10) got back on track Wednesday evening, with a 5-1 victory over American International College (3-10, 2-4 NE-10) in a non-conference game in Springfield.
Junior forward Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, MA) continued her dominant play, tallying three goals on the night, including the game-winner. Her season total is up to 16 goals, with 37 overall points on the year.
Netminder Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) played the entire game, allowing just one goal and stopping seven shots for her eighth victory of the year.
American International took an early lead, as Jacki Lapointe (Danvers, MA) scored for the Yellow Jackets in the first minute of play (0:54). The River Hawks proceeded to go on a five-goal run for the rest of the game, though, securing their 11th victory of the year.
Macy retaliated in the seventh minute of play (6:36), opening scoring with an assist from Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA) to tie the game at one apiece.
Macy went on to score twice more in the first half, giving the River Hawks a lead they would not relinquish. She first struck in the 21st minute of play (20:04) after receiving a pass from Abby Auld (Waltham, MA) and then again in the 27th minute of play (26:10), unassisted.
Midfielder Liz Day (North Andover, MA) capped off UMass Lowell’s first-half run, netting an unassisted goal in the 34th minute of play (33:51). The River Hawks went into the second half with a 4-1 lead.
Enaire tallied the game’s final goal as the clock wound down, grabbing her 11th goal of the year in the 69th minute of play (68:04).
Enaire and Macy each tallied six shots in the game, while junior forward Lizzy Ales (Arlington, MA) came off the bench to take five on goal.
The River Hawks outshot the Yellow Jackets 24-10 on the night, including a 12-4 advantage in the first half. AIC goalkeeper Kim Steiner (Little Falls, NY) made 11 saves in the game, allowing five UMass Lowell goals.
The River Hawks return to action on Saturday afternoon, when they host St. Michael’s College for a Northeast-10 Conference game on Cushing Field at 1:00 p.m.
