#3 River Hawks on Losing End of 1-0 Decision Against #2 Bentley

Oct. 31, 2009

Box Score

The #3 seed UMass Lowell River Hawks and #2 seed Bentley University battled through a defensive showcase on Saturday afternoon, as the Falcons eventually came out on top of the 1-0 decision in the Northeast-10 Tournament Semifinal, played at Stonehill's W.B. Mason Stadium in Easton.

With the loss, the River Hawks fall to 16-5 on the year and the Falcons now sit at 15-4 overall. UMass Lowell is currently ranked No. 5 in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division II Poll, while Bentley is just below them at No. 6.

UMass Lowell outshot its opponent 18-10 on the afternoon but was only able to get nine shots on goal in the game. The River Hawks also held a 16-5 advantage in penalty corners during the match, but were unable to find the back of the cage.

Bentley's sophomore midfielder Stephanie Sideris (Watertown, MA) netted her 10th goal of the year, which proved to be the difference-maker in the game, in the 54th minute of play (53:13).

The Falcons pressured the cage and kept the ball in their offensive zone after earning two consecutive penalty corners. The circle was crowded after an initial shot brought River Hawk netminder Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) to the ground and Sideris was able to grab the rebound, sneaking the ball past Carbon on the far side for the only tally of the game.

Carbon made six saves on the afternoon, allowing the only goal of the game, while Alyssa Sliney (Brewster, MA) made nine stops in 70 minutes of shutout work.

The River Hawks will await the NCAA Selection Show, which will air on Monday, Nov. 2 at 2:00 p.m. via broadband on www.NCAA.com, to see who what lies ahead for the final leg of the 2009-10 campaign.
