The No. 4 UMass Lowell River Hawks (10-2, 3-1 NE-10) fell to the Southern Connecticut Owls (4-9, 3-2 NE-10), 4-3, in a Northeast-10 conference match on Saturday afternoon in New Haven.
Junior forwards Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA) and Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, MA) each tallied four points on the afternoon, but the River Hawks’ three goals were not enough to defeat the Owls.
Macy opened scoring in the game in the 12th minute of play (11:33) when the River Hawks were able to capitalize on a penalty corner opportunity. Enaire passed the ball in and Macy took a shot from the top of the circle, finding the back of the cage for her 12th goal of the year.
Six minutes later, the Owls tied the game off a tip-in goal by freshman Laurie Cockerline (Lopatcong, NJ). Southern Connecticut pulled ahead in the final minutes of the first half, as senior Kelly Anne McCafferty (Durham, NH) got a shot past UMass Lowell goalkeeper Kate Hickey (Medway, MA) in the 33rd minute of play (32:52).
The Owls continued pressure in their offensive circle at the start of the second, as defender Dieny Charlot (Deep River, CT) was able to sneak the ball in through a flurry of action in front of the cage, putting SCSU up 3-1 in the 38th minute of play (37:50).
The River Hawks retaliated just over a minute later, when the scoring tandem of Macy and Enaire struck again in the 40th minute of play (39:07). They once again capitalized on a penalty corner and Enaire assisted on Macy’s 13th goal of the season, making it a 3-2 game.
In the 41st minute of play, the Owls followed suit and Cockerline scored her second goal of the game, this time off a penalty corner, bringing the Owls’ lead back to two.
Enaire did not let the River Hawks go down without a fight, though, as she scored an unassisted tally in the 52nd minute of play (51:53) to bring UMass Lowell back within one with her 10th goal of the year.
The River Hawks continued to put offensive pressure on the Owls, but their efforts were not enough, as time ran out before they were able to tie the game back up.
UMass Lowell outshot Southern Connecticut 20-11 on the afternoon, including 10 by Macy. The River Hawks owned a slight, 9-7 advantage over the Owls in penalty corner opportunities, as well.
Hickey started for the River Hawks, allowing two goals and making three stops in the first half. Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) relieved Hickey for the second half, playing 34:01 before the River Hawks gambled with an empty net for the final 59 seconds of play. Carbon allowed two goals in the second half.
Southern Connecticut goalkeeper Lauren Zarrella (Morris, CT) made eight saves and allowed three goals, playing the entire 70 minutes.
The River Hawks return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Holyoke for a non-conference tilt at American International at 7:00 p.m.
