Box Score
The No. 5 UMass Lowell River Hawks were unable to overcome a late-game goal by the Adelphi Panthers and lost by a score of 2-1 in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Saturday in New York.
With the loss, the River Hawks now sit at 15-4 on the year with a 7-3 mark in NE-10 action, while the Panthers improve to 12-7 overall and 7-3 in NE-10 play.
Adelphi struck early, opening scoring in the 10th minute of play (9:24) on a goal by Jeanette Heimerle (Smithtown, NY) off the penalty corner. The 1-0 score stayed stagnant through the first half.
It wasn’t until the 58th minute of play (57:08) that the River Hawks got on the board after junior forward Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA) knotted the game at one apiece. She knocked the ball in through a scramble in front of the net.
Minutes later, though, the Panthers struck back, as Jessica Mulhern (Commack, NY) scored on a one-timer through the UMass Lowell defense in the 60th minute of play (59:55). Neither team was able to score again in the final 10 minutes and the 2-1 score was enough to hand the River Hawks their fourth loss of the year.
Despite the loss, the River Hawks outshot their opponent 14-7 and held a 9-6 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.
Junior netminder Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) stopped three shots on the afternoon, allowing both goals. Adelphi’s Lucia Vigliotti (Westbury, NY) made six saves in the game, allowing one goal.
The defeat places the River Hawks in the third seed for the Northeast-10 Tournament and they will host the Owls of Southern Connecticut on Wednesday on Cushing Field.
