The River Hawk Report - A Tough Night for Men's Soccer
Senior F Maurice Johnson (Kingston, Jamaica) had a hand in all three goals as Post University defeated UMass Lowell, 3-1, Wednesday night in a non-conference men’s soccer tilt at Cushing Field.
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 3-11-0 overall entering Saturday’s regular season home finale against Saint Rose (12:00).
The win was the third straight and fourth in five matches for Post, which improved to 5-7-2 overall and hosts Chestnut Hill Saturday at 2:00.
Johnson broke a 1-1 tie in the 62nd minute when he capitalized on a defensive mistake and beat senior G Ryan Richards (Holden, MA) one-on-one inside the left post.
Johnson then set up the back-breaking goal by sophomore Elthany Morais (Cape Verde Islands) in the 81st minute. Johnson sent a through-ball to Morais, who split the defense and tucked his attempt in the lower left corner.
Post jumped ahead 1-0 in the 40th minute when Johnson crossed to junior F Frantzy Noze (Norwich, CT), who slotted home from inside the six-yard box.
The River Hawks leveled in the 56th when freshman M Bruno Bonicontro (Marlboro, MA) steered a left-footed free kick from the right corner of the box into the path of senior D Michael Galvin (Brockton, MA), who tapped home.
Shots favored Post, 16-14, but UMass Lowell had an 8-6 edge on frame. Richards had three saves while freshman G Errol Reid (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) had seven saves.
