ORANGEBURG, NY - Junior F Victor Colon (Chicago, IL) compiled career-highs of 28 points and 11 rebounds as UMass Lowell defeated Dominican College, 70-64, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference men's basketball clash at the Hennessy Center.
The victory halted consecutive losses for the River Hawks, who improved to 5-3 entering Tuesday's home clash against Assumption College (7:30).
Tuesday's game promotion features a half-time shootout for a flatscreen television.
Dominican slipped to 4-4.
Colon converted 10 of 21 field goal attempts, including 4 of 9 from 3-point range, and all four free throw attempts and also snatched seven offensive rebounds. Colon's effort comes right off a then-career-best 25-point, nine-rebound performance Wednesday night in an 87-72 loss at Saint Anselm, in which he meshed 7 of 12 attempts from long range.
Junior G Kevin Carr (Lancaster, OH) chipped in a season-high 17 points, hitting 10 of 10 free throw attempts.
UMass Lowell improved its road record to 3-1.
Senior G Will Carty led the Chargers with 17 points and three assists.
"We got off to another terrific start and we were up 20 points in the first half," said UML Head Coach Greg Herenda. "We've got to give credit to Dominican for fighting back, but we were tough enough to win another very difficult road game."
The River Hawks jumped out to a 21-6 cushion with 11:16 left in the first half and never looked back, scoring 31 points off 23 Charger turnovers (while committing 16), and limiting Dominican to six field goals (6-20).
UMass Lowell posted a 42-26 lead at the break - led by 19 points from Colon, who converted 8 of 10 field goals - but struggled from the field in the second half, shooting .267 (8-30) while Dominican found its touch, shooting .552 (16-29).
The River Hawks, however, enjoyed slight edges from the free throw line (20-15) and on the offensive glass (16-11).
UMass Lowell led by as many as 20 points (46-26) shortly into the second half, but Dominican trimmed the lead to 48-42 with a 16-2 run with 12:58 remaining. Sophomore C Kresimir Knez led the run with four points.
The River Hawks, however, countered with a 14-3 spurt, led by five points apiece from Colon and freshman G Marcus Johnson (South Bend, IN). Dominican made a late charge and cut the deficit to six points (66-60) with 1:08 left to play, but a jumper and two free throws by Carr secured the win.
"Victor Colon gave us another great performance and Kevin Carr made all his free throws, plus a huge jumper near the end," Herenda noted. "This was a very gratifying win on the road."
