LOWELL (Jan. 31, 2009) - Senior G Stephanie Houghton (Manchester, NH) scored 18 points as Southern New Hampshire University defeated UMass Lowell, 67-58, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball clash at the Costello Athletic Center.
The loss was the fifth straight for the River Hawks, who slipped to 7-13 overall and 4-11 in the NE-10 entering Wednesday's tilt at Bentley (5:30). Southern New Hampshire improved to 12-8 overall and 7-8 in the Conference and hosts Merrimack Wednesday at 5:30.
The loss also halted a 29-game winning streak for UMass Lowell in the series history against Southern New Hampshire. The last time the Penmen scored a win over UMass Lowell was on Feb. 22, 1995 in Manchester, NH. It was also SNHU's first victory at the Costello Athletic Center since Jan. 23, 1990.
Senior C Revital Carmon (Bat-Yam, Israel) led the River Hawks with 13 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots, her sixth double-double of the year. Junior G Megan Berry (Ipswich, MA) added 10 points and three steals.
Senior G Alyssa Whitney (Somerville, MA) registered 14 points and four assists for the Penmen.
SNHU led 30-26 at the half and shot .500 in the second half (13-26) opposed to UMass Lowell's .379 shooting (11-29).
The Penmen led 39-37 with 14:07 left to play, but went on a 23-6 run to establish a 62-43 cushion with 4:52 remaining. Postgraduate G Brooke LeFort (Cumberland, RI) led the surge with six points.
UMass Lowell scored 10 straight points to cut the lead to 62-53 with 3:28 left to play, but was unable to muster closer than eight points.
