Roebothan Nets Two, River Hawks down Warriors, 3-2

NORTH ANDOVER, MA - Mark Roebothan (St. John's, Nfld.) scored two goals in the third period including the game-winning goal as UMass Lowell defeated Merrimack, 3-2, Saturday night in Hockey East action at Lawler Arena.

The River Hawks have won three of the last four and improve to 10-12-0 overall and 8-8-0 in the league. The Warriors have lost five in a row and fall to 5-14-3 overall and 2-12-2 against the league.

Roebothan scored both of his goals in the third period, his first coming in the first five minutes of the period. His second goal, the game-winner, came at the 12:40 mark of the final period.

The River Hawks opened the scoring - a Matt Ferreira (Brampton, Ont.) goal - and never trailed in the game. Ferreira scored his fourth goal of the season at 2:08 of the first period to give the River Hawks a 1-0 lead. Michael Scheu (Buffalo, N.Y.), playing in his first career game, and Paul Worthington (Langhorne, Pa.) picked up the assists.

It was the first time in five games the River Hawks scored the first goal of the game.

Chris Barton evened the score at 13:41 of the second on one of Merrimack's 15 shots in the period. Rob Ricci and Jesse Todd picked up the assists.

Roebothan gave the River Hawks their second lead of the night at the 4:50 mark of the third with assists from Jeremy Dehner (Madison, Wis.) and Scott Campbell (Navan, Ont.).

Merrimack yet again netted the equalizer, this time off the stick of Mickey Rego (Hudson, Mass.) at 11:14 of the third. Ryan Flanigan (Rochester, N.Y.) and Justin Bonitatibus (Arlington, Mass.) had the assists.

Just one minute, 26 seconds after Rego tied the game, Roebothan answered with the game-winning goal, his second of the night. Campbell and Mike Potacco (Kinnelon, N.J.) earned the assists.

Nevin Hamilton (Ashland, Mass.) snapped a personal three-game losing streak to improve to 6-5-0 on the season. Hamilton made 30 saves including 14 in the second period.

Joe Cannata (Wakefield, Mass.) made 26 saves for Merrimack, but took the loss to fall to 3-6-3.

The River Hawks were 0-for-5 on the power play. UML had gone six straight games with a power play goal. The Warriors were 1-for-4 on the man-advantage.

The River Hawks return to the ice Friday night when they travel to the University of Maine for a 7:00 p.m. face off at Alfond Arena. The Warriors are next in action Friday night when they host Boston University.
