WEST HAVEN, CT - Sophomore G Danielle Stellmacher compiled 18 points and 10 rebounds as the University of New Haven defeated UMass Lowell, 66-59, Tuesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball clash at the Charger Gymnasium.
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 7-10 overall and 4-8 in the NE-10 entering Saturday's home tilt against Franklin Pierce University (2:00). New Haven improved to 11-7 overall and 6-7 in the Conference.
Junior Jen Valente (Prospect, CT) led UMass Lowell with 13 points and four rebounds, hitting 6 of 11 field goal attempts, while senior F Antonnea Robinson (West Haven, CT) added 10 points.
Senior F Lauren Hood added 16 points and four rebounds as she converted 6 of 11 shots from the floor for the Chargers. Senior G Briiana Rende scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Turnovers were virtually even (UMass Lowell 21, New Haven 22), but it was the Chargers who capitalized, outscoring UMass Lowell, 23-11 off turnovers. New Haven also outscored the River Hawks at the free throw line, 19-3, and shot .538 in the second half (14-26) while UMass Lowell shot .455 (10-22).
New Haven led 51-50 with 6:24 left to play and used an 11-2 run to establish a 62-52 cushion with 3:18 left to play. The River Hawks cut the lead to five (64-59) with 19 seconds remaining on a 3-point shot by junior G Rahshala Valentine (Cincinnati, OH), but Stellmacher meshed a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left to seal the win.
