SOMERVILLE, MA - UMass Lowell captured six events, including all three sprints, as it won the Tufts Jumbo Invitational Track and Field Meet Saturday at Clarence Dussault Track and Field Complex.
The River Hawks scored 156 points, defeating Keene State, which compiled 126 points. Rensselaer (124), Tufts (123) and Fitchburg State (79) rounded out the top five schools.
The championship completed a double of sorts as UMass Lowell also won the women's crown.
Freshman Roy Monson (Stoneham, MA), sophomore Donte Brown (Brockton, MA) and junior Doug Caves (Oxford, MA) each won titles in the sprints. Monson won the 55 meter dash in 6.66 seconds, edging Mark Johnson of Worcester State (6.68) and junior teammate Jeffrey Wundt (Southwick, MA) (6.70).
Brown won his second title in as many weeks - he won the 400 meters last week at the Dartmouth Relays in 49.08 - placing first in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.66 and leading two teammates. Sophomore Sam Bastien (Canton, MA) placed second in 22.79 and Wundt took third in 23.06.
In his first action of the season, Caves won the 400 meters with a time of 49.64 seconds.
Also making the most of his first appearance of the year, senior Andrew Grange (Methuen, MA) won the 600 meters in 1:22.94.
Junior William Nguidjoi (Lawrence, MA) won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 2.5 inches and also scored in the triple jump, placing second with a distance of 42' 11.0''. Freshman Chris Pendleton (Amesbury, MA) took third in the long jump 20' 7.0''.
Sophomore Cory Murray (Methuen, MA) captured his first shot put title of the season with a distance of 49' 5.5''
Junior Robert Liekweg (Salem, NH) was among a handful of River Hawks who emerged as runners-up as he took second overall but topped the collegiate field in the 800 meters in 2:03.96. Senior Joey DeWitt (Ellsworth, ME) placed second in the 1,000 meters in 2:31.34 and led two teammates in the top 10.
Freshman Eric McDonald (Groveland, MA) placed fifth in 2:34.68 and sophomore Sean Gelinas (Northwood, NH) eighth in 2:36.97.
Sophomore Matt Blazon (Lowell, MA) placed second in the 55 meter hurdles in 7.98 seconds, ahead of freshman Giovanni Frias (Lawrence, MA), who took seventh (8.43) and freshman Sam LeBeau (Auburn, MA) who placed eighth (8.47).
Freshman Shaddi Ali (Stoneham, MA) was the runner-up in the high jump as he cleared 6' 5.0''. Frias placed fifth (6' 3.25'') while Blazon took seventh (5' 11.25'').
UMass Lowell enters the Boston University Terrier Classic next Saturday.
