AIC Staves Off UMass Lowell, 53-50

LOWELL - Junior F Stacy Boisvert (Agawam, MA) registered 21 points and five rebounds as American International College defeated UMass Lowell, 53-50, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball clash at the Costello Athletic Center.

With the loss, the River Hawks slipped to 7-9 overall and 4-7 in the NE-10 entering Tuesday's clash at New Haven (5:30). AIC improved to 13-7 overall and 8-4 in the Conference and hosts Southern New Hampshire Tuesday at 5:30.

Junior F Jen Valente (Prospect, CT) led the River Hawks with 12 points as she converted 4 of 7 field goal attempts and all four free throws. Junior G Rahshala Valentine (Cincinnati, OH) chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists while senior F Antonnea Robinson (West Haven, CT) chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.

Boisvert converted 6 of 12 field goals and 9 of 10 free throws for the Yellow Jackets. Junior G Jeannette Johnathan (Central Islip, NY) added 14 points while sophomore G Laechia Conley (Urbandale, IA) had 10 points six rebounds.

AIC limited the River Hawks to .208 shooting in the second half (5-24) while shooting .409 (9-22). The Yellow Jackets also held a marginal lead in 3-point shooting (6-19 opposed to UMass Lowell's 3-19), offsetting UMass Lowell's 22-14 advantage in the paint and 17-13 edge at the free throw line.

AIC led 51-39 with 7:00 left to play, but the River Hawks responded with 11 straight points to cut the deficit to 51-50 with six seconds remaining. Robinson led the surge with two free throws with 4:29 remaining and a pair with six seconds left.

The River Hawks, however, were forced to foul and Boisvert meshed both shots to give the Yellow Jackets a 53-50 edge with four seconds left to play. A jumper by Valentine at the horn was off the mark.
