LOWELL, MA – Six different players scored, including two goals each for sophomores Lizzy Ales (Arlington, MA), Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA) and Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, MA), as No. 4 UMass Lowell shutout Merrimack, 9-0, in Northeast-10 field hockey action at Cushing Field.
The River Hawks have won four straight, the last three by shutouts, and improve to 4-2 overall and 4-0 in the NE-10. The Warriors have lost four straight and fall to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the NE-10.
UML scored four goals in the first half and five in the second half to reach the season-high total of nine for the game. The River Hawks also totaled a season-high 30 shots, out-shooting Merrimack 30-2 for the match.
In addition to the two strikes by Enaire, Ales and Macy, Jill Tierney (Newburyport, MA), Heather Woodward (Ashburnham, MA) and Abby Auld (Waltham, MA) scored for UML.
Tierney got the scoring started re-directing a centering pass from Michelle Harrington into the back of the net at the 1:31 mark of the first half.
Macy and Ales added to the River Hawks lead with goals in the 22nd and 24th minutes respectively. Both strikes were unassisted. Enaire made it 4-0 late in the first half – at 30:37 – with an assist from Woodward.
Woodward got the scoring going in the second half converting on a penalty stroke goal just over eight minutes into the second half (38:11).
Enaire scored her second of the afternoon with an assist from freshman Kayla Littig (Carver, MA) at 52:54. Less than five minutes later Macy got her second of the match with an assist from Day. Less than a minute after Macy’s second of the contest, Ales netted her second of the match at 58:18 with an assist from Woodward.
Freshman Abby Auld capped the scoring with her first career goal at the 62:54 mark slipping a backhand shot into the cage from the left side on a breakaway.
Danielle Dodier (Kensington, NH) got the win in goal for the River Hawks playing the first 35 minutes of the match. Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) played the second half. Neither goalkeeper had to make a save.
Emily Achilles (Portsmouth, NH) took the loss in goal for the Warriors. Achilles allowed four goals and made seven saves in 35 minutes of action. Jillian Lewis Exeter, NH) played the final 35 for Merrimack, surrendering five goals and making four stops.
The River Hawks out-shot Merrimack 15-0 in the first half and 15-2 in the second half for the 30-2 advantage. UML also held the advantage in penalty corners, 13-2.
In addition to out-shooting Merrimack, 30-2, for the match, the River Hawks held the advantage in penalty corners, 13-2.
It’s the second straight year the River Hawks have scored eight or more goals in a win over Merrimack. UML defeated the Warriors, 8-3, last season at Cushing Field.
UMass Lowell returns to the field Tuesday when it travels to Saint Michael’s. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. The Warriors are next in action Tuesday at Saint Anselm.
