LOWELL, MA – Liz Day (North Andover, MA) scored for the River Hawks, but IUP defeated UMass Lowell, 2-1, Friday afternoon in field hockey action in the season opener for both schools.
The Crimson Hawks are 1-0 on the season with the win. The River Hawks are 0-1 with the loss.
After a scoreless opening half, Brittany Owens (Reading, PA) got IUP on the board with her first goal of the season in the 49th minute. Jess Frantz (Kunkletown, PA) assisted on the goal.
Seven and a half minutes later Day scored the equalizer for the River Hawks, her first of the season. Fellow sophomore Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA) assisted on Day’s goal at 55:48.
Three minutes after Day’s goal, at 58:49, Irma Bakker (Heiloo, Netherlands) netted the game-winning goal for the Crimson Hawks. Angela Frantz (Kunkletown, PA) picked up the assist.
Lydia Dolly (Lancaster, PA) got the win in goal for IUP, making three saves. Danielle Dodier (Kensington, NH) took the loss for UML. Dodier made two saves in 59 minutes of action. Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) played the final 11 minutes of the match for the River Hawks.
The Crimson Hawks out-shot the River Hawks 5-4 for the match, including a 4-2 edge in the second half. UML held the advantage in penalty corners, 5-4.
The River Hawks and Crimson Hawks return to the field for the second game of their two-game series Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
