Field Hockey: No. 6 Bentley Upends No. 4 UMass Lowell, 1-0, in NE-10 Title Game

LOWELL, Mass. – Courtney Bartlett (Brunswick, Maine) scored the only goal of the game in overtime as No. 6 Bentley defeated No. 4 UMass Lowell, 1-0, to capture the 2008 Northeast-10 field hockey tournament Sunday afternoon at Cushing Field.

The Falcons improve to 17-5 with the win, their 16th straight victory. The tournament title was their eighth overall and first since 2002. The River Hawks fall to 18-4 overall and missed out on winning their sixth straight tournament championship. UML had its seven-game win streak snapped with the loss.

Bartlett, named to the All-Tournament Team, scored the game’s only goal just a minute and 45 seconds into the overtime period – 71:45 into the match. Nicole Murphy (Dedham, Mass.) picked up the assist on the game-winner, a goal that came after a penalty corner.

Alyssa Sliney (Brewster, Mass.), named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, made six saves to earn her 17th win of the season and eight shutout of the season.

Amy Carbon, named to the All-Tournament Team, stopped five of six shots faced, but took the loss in goal for UML.

Each team recorded nine shots on goal. The River Hawks held the advantage in the first half, 7-2. Bentley had a 6-2 edge in the second half. The Falcons had the only shot of overtime.

UML held a slight edge in penalty corners, 7-6, for the game. The Falcons had the only penalty corner of the overtime period, the corner that led to the winning goal.

Carbon and Jaci Moulton (Baldwinville, Mass.) were named to the All-Tournament team from UMass Lowell.

Sliney, Bartlett and Jenna Panzone (East Falmouth, Mass.) were picked for the All-Tournament team for Bentley.

Stephanie Howard (Franklin Pierce), Jordan Smalling (St. Michael’s) and Dieny Charlot (Southern Connecticut) round out the All-Tournament team selections.
