ALBANY, NY - Senior C Lauren Revesz scored 28 points as the College of Saint Rose defeated UMass Lowell, 84-79 Thursday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball clash at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
With the loss, the River Hawks slipped to 6-7 overall and 3-5 in the NE-10 entering Saturday's game at Pace (1:30). Saint Rose improved to 9-5 overall and 4-5 in the Conference.
The loss spoiled a pair of career-highs for junior F Jen Valente (Prospect, CT) and junior G Rahshala Valentine (Cincinnati, OH), who each scored 22 points, combining to shoot 17-26 from the field and 9-12 from 3-point range.
Valente converted 9 of 14 field goals, 4 of 5 from long range, and grabbed five rebounds while Valentine connected on 8-12 (5-7 treys) and dished out four assists.
Sophomore G Tamaria Menefee (Dorchester, MA) chipped in 10 points and three assists.
Revesz converted 9 of 15 shots from the floor and 10 of 11 free throws to lead the Golden Knights while senior G Dana Brown added 25 points, converting 7 of 14 field goals (3-6 from long range) and 8 of 12 attempts from the free throw line.
Turnovers plagued the River Hawks, who had 19 opposed to eight by Saint Rose, enabling the Golden Knights to post a 31-7 scoring margin off miscues.
The loss spoiled a stellar shooting night for the River Hawks, who shot a collective .544 from the field (31-57), including .571 in the first half (16-28). Saint Rose struggled to a .375 clip in the first half but found the mark in the second, shooting .577 (15-26).
The Golden Knights also outscored the River Hawks from the free throw line 23-7.
UMass Lowell shot 10-21 from long range, falling one short of tying the single game school record of 11, while the Golden Knights converted 7 of 20 attempts.
UMass Lowell trailed 67-62 with 9:06 remaining but rallied behind an 11-4 run - fueled by a pair of treys from Valentine - to snatch a 73-71 lead with 5:50 left.
With 34 seconds remaining, Revesz converted a layup to give the Golden Knights an 81-79 lead.
Following its sixth and final timeout, UMass Lowell was whistled for technical foul for attempting to call another with 19 seconds left, resulting in a pair of made free throws by Revesz to put the game out of reach.
In the first half, UMass Lowell raced out to a 32-23 lead behind 11 points from Valente, but the Golden Knights closed the half with a 13-4 run to cut the deficit to 36-35 at the break. Brown scored all eight of her first half points in the spurt.
