LOWELL – Sophomore F Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, MA) registered a hat trick and sophomore F Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA) added two goals as No. 4 UMass Lowell defeated No. 8 Southern Connecticut, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference field hockey clash at Cushing Field. With the win, UMass Lowell secured at least a share of the Northeast-10 Conference regular season title for the third time in four years. The victory was also the fourth straight for the River Hawks, who improved to 15-3 overall and 15-1 in the NE-10 entering Wednesday’s match at Saint Anselm (3:30). Southern Connecticut slipped to 10-8 overall and 10-6 in the Conference and hosts American International Wednesday at 7:00. The River Hawks led 2-0 at the break behind Enaire’s goal in the 23rd minute and Macy’s first in the 32nd. Out of a scramble in front of the cage, sophomore F Liz Day (North Andover) fed Enaire on the left side, whose one-timed shot beat Owl goalkeeper Lauren Zarrella (Morris, CT). Macy doubled the lead nearly 10 minutes later when senior M Michelle Harrington (Rockport, MA) fed a ball from the top of the circle, which Macy stroked home. Macy scored her second in the 39th on a similar play when senior M Missy Seeley (East Hampstead, NH) drove a pass from the top, which Macy tipped in from the left of the goal. Macy saved her best for last when junior F Jaci Moulton (Baldwinville, MA) crossed a ball from the right of the cage, which Macy calmly stroked out of the air for the 4-0 cushion. Freshman F Inga Stonga (East London, South Africa) gave the Owls a lifeline with a pair of goals midway through the second half. In the 52nd minute, junior F Kelly Anne McCafferty (Durham, NH) slid a ball from the right side of the crease, which Stonga tucked by River Hawk goalkeeper Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA). Stonga then cut the deficit in half in the 57th when she tipped in a pass from sophomore M Ann Berry (Belfast, ME) from the top if the circle. Enaire, however, put the match out of reach when sophomore F Lizzy Ales (Arlington, MA) sent a ball from the top of the circle, which Enaire tucked in off the pads of Zarrella. UMass Lowell outshot Southern Connecticut 23-8 overall and 20-2 on target. Zarrella stopped 15 shots for the Owls.
