LOWELL – Junior M Molly Clay (Rockport, MA) scored one goal and assisted on two others as No. 4 UMass Lowell defeated Assumption College, 4-2, Thursday night in a Northeast-10 Conference field hockey clash at Cushing Field. The victory was the third straight for the River Hawks, who improved to 14-3 overall and 14-1 in the NE-10 entering Saturday’s home match with No. 8 Southern Connecticut (1:00). Assumption slipped to 2-15 overall and 1-14 in the Conference and hosts Saint Michael’s Sunday at 2:00. Following a 1-0 lead into the break, Clay had a hand in all three goals in the second half and set up a goal by sophomore F Liz Day (North Andover, MA) just 58 seconds into the half. Clay sent a ball into the circle which Day deflected past Assumption goalkeeper Danielle Luongo (Northboro, MA). Day returned the favor to Clay three minutes later when she sent a pass through the crease, which an unmarked Clay one-timed from the left side into the cage of a 3-0 cushion. Assumption pulled one back against the run of play in the 48th minute when junior F Hillary Zysk (Walpole, MA) took a pass off a penalty corner, found junior D Michelle Pasquale (Shrewsbury, MA) to the left of the goal, who stroked a shot inside the far post. Sophomore F Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA) gave the River Hawks a 4-1 lead when Clay sent a ball into the circle, which Enaire tipped high into the goal. Zysk gave Assumption a lifeline in the 68th when she rounded two defenders and tucked a shot past sophomore Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) to cut the lead to 4-2. The River Hawks opened the scoring in the fourth minute when senior M Missy Seeley (East Hampstead, NH) converted off a penalty corner from junior F Jaci Moulton (Baldwinville, MA). UMass Lowell outshot Assumption 22-5 overall and 13-4 on target. Carbon had two saves while Luongo stopped nine shots for the Greyhounds.
