LOWELL, MA – Nicole Murphy (Dedham, MA) scored the winning shootout goal as No. 8 Bentley upset No. 4 UMass Lowell, 1-0, in Northeast-10 field hockey action Wednesday night at Cushing Field. Bentley won the shootout, 3-1. The Falcons have won eight straight and improve to 9-5 overall and 9-3 in the NE-10. The loss snapped the River Hawks’ 11-game win streak as they fall to 11-3 overall and 11-1 in the NE-10. Murphy’s game-winning goal came after the two teams played a scoreless match through 100 minutes of regulation and overtime. Murphy was the fifth shooter for the Falcons. Allison St. Jean (Lebanon, ME) and Victoria Bergantino (Waltham, MA) also scored in the shootout for Bentley. Senior midfielder Heather Woodward (Ashburnham, MA) scored the River Hawks only shootout goal. The River Hawks held advantages in shots, 20-17, and penalty corners, 13-7, but suffered their first conference loss of the season. Senior Michelle Harrington (Rockport, MA) led UML with six shots attempted. Alyssa Sliney (Brewster, MA) got the win for Bentley stopping all 12 shots she faced. She turned away three of four shots in the shootout. Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) got the loss in goal for UML, her first of the season. Carbon stopped all nine shots she faced in regulation and overtime. Carbon stopped two of five shots face in the shootout. The River Hawks are next in action Saturday afternoon at Merrimack. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. The Falcons next play Saturday when they host Stonehill.
