Second Half Surge Lifts Owls Over UMass Lowell, 2-0

LOWELL, MA – Freshman M Jenna Mallico (Milford, CT) and junior M Ashley Knight (Rockland, MA) each scored unassisted goals in the second half as Southern Connecticut State defeated UMass Lowell, 2-0, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer clash at Cushing Field. With the loss, the River Hawks slipped to 1-2-2 overall and 0-1-2 in the NE-10 entering Wednesday’s match at American International (3:30). The Owls improved to 3-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the Conference entering Wednesday’s game at C.W. Post (4:00). Following a scoreless first half, Knight capitalized in the 68th minute when she steered a right-footed free kick from the left side outside the box inside the far post for a 1-0 lead. The Owls doubled their lead in the 77th minute when Mallico meandered past a River Hawk defender on the left and beat junior G Jamie Gillis (North Billerica, MA) inside the far post. UMass Lowell’s best chance came in the 33rd minute when junior M Christiana Rogers (Groton, MA), fresh into the match, lofted an attempt from the top of the box which caromed off the bar and was cleared. Southern Connecticut outshot UMass Lowell, 9-8 overall and 5-4 on target. Gillis had two saves while sophomore G Katie DiDio (Vernon, CT) stopped five shots in the shutout.
