LOWELL, MA - Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA), one of three different goal scorers for UML, scored the game-winning goal as No. 4 UMass Lowell defeated American International, 3-1, Thursday night in Northeast-10 field hockey action at Cushing Field.
The River Hawks have won 11 straight and improve to 11-2 overall and 11-0 in the NE-10. The loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 2-10 overall and 2-9 in the NE-10.
Despite being out-shot 16-2 in the first half the Yellow Jackets held a 1-0 lead at halftime. Amanda McLean scored the goal, her third of the year at 30:55, with an assist from Jacki Lapointe.
The River Hawks scored all three goals in the second half, while compiling 25 shots - UML out-shot AIC 25-1 in the second half.
Molly Clay (Rockport, MA) got the River Hawks on the board in the 51st minute of play with her second tally of the season. Michelle Harrington assisted on the goal, extending her assist streak to 11 games.
Five minutes later Enaire netted the game-winner, her ninth goal of the year, at 55:52. Junior defender Laura Sullivan (Norwood, MA) assisted on the strike.
Senior Jill Tierney (Newburyport, MA) capped the UML scoring with her sixth of the year at 57:03. Liz Day (North Andover, MA) picked up the assist.
Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA), starting for the seventh straight, picked up her seventh win of the season. She made one save and allowed one goal in 70 minutes.
AIC goalkeeper Kim Steiner (Redford, NY) took the loss allowing three goals despite making 28 saves - 11 in the first half and 17 in the second.
For the game the River Hawks out-shot the Yellow Jackets 41-3. The 41 shots were a season high for UML. The River Hawks also held the advantage in penalty corners, 15-1.
The River Hawks return to the field Wednesday when they host Bentley College (7:00 p.m.). The Yellow Jackets are next in action Sunday when they host Bentley.
