MIAMI SHORES, FL - Freshman Sarah Wolfer (Newberg, OR) posted a hat trick to lead Barry University over UMass Lowell, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in a non-conference women's soccer clash at Buccaneer Field.
With the loss, the River Hawks slipped to 1-1 entering next Saturday's home opener against Stonehill (12:00). The Buccaneers improved to 1-1.
Barry opened the scoring in the second minute when senior M Elana Brady found Wolfer with a through-ball which she slotted past junior G Jamie Gillis (North Billerica, MA).
The Buccaneers doubled their lead in the 54th when senior D Carly Radcliff touched a ball through the middle to Wolfer, who beat the River Hawk defense again for a 2-0 cushion.
Wolfer completed the hat trick in the 87th minute when she and Radcliff combined on a similar play.
UMass Lowell outshot Barry, 19-16 overall but the Buccaneers had a 13-7 edge on target. Gillis stopped nine shots while sophomore G Sami Cromartie had seven saves in the shutout.
UML had opportunities to level in the first half, highlighted by a sequence of four straight corner kicks, but was unable to convert.
In the second half, senior F Natalia Mendoza (Haverhill, MA) nearly cut the deficit in half in the 77th minute, but her attempt caromed off the crossbar.
