Men's Track & Field: Ali, River Hawks Impress at NU Husky Carnival

BOSTON - Freshman Shaddi Ali (Stoneham, MA) placed second in the high jump to lead the UMass Lowell men's track and field team at the Northeastern University Husky Carnival Saturday afternoon at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center.

The Carnival drew a host of Division I, II and III colleges as well as many athletes representing postgraduate track and field clubs from the Northeast.

Ali cleared 6 feet, 8.0 inches - which ranks tied for sixth among UMass Lowell's all-time individual results - and placed second to senior Patrick Casey of New Hampshire, who cleared 6' 9.0''.

Ali's leap fell just 0.75 inches of meeting the NCAA provisional list. Freshman Giovanni Frias (Lawrence, MA) placed sixth, clearing 6' 2.0''.

Junior Tim Guerin (Auburn, MA) placed third overall and tops among Division II and III runners in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:44.96, just behind Teddy Vrountas of Northeastern (8:44.57) and Robert Edgerton of New Hampshire (8:16.76).

Sophomore Sean Gelinas (Northwood, NH) placed sixth overall (third among Division II-III runners) in 8:46.57.

Also topping the Division II-III field was sophomore Cory Murray (Methuen, MA), who placed sixth overall in the shot put with a toss of 49' 2.5''.

Junior William Nguidjoi (Lawrence, MA) and freshman Chris Pendleton (Amesbury, MA) also impressed in the field events. Nguidjoi placed fifth (second) in the triple jump with a distance of 42' 10.75'' while Pendleton placed eight (third) in the long jump with a leap of 21' 5.5''.

Three River Hawks finished among the top six places in the 400 meter dash, led by junior Robert Liekweg (Salem, NH), who took fourth in 50.18 seconds. Freshman Jeffrey Wundt (Southwick, MA) took fifth in 50.32 while junior Justin Oliver (Lowell, MA) placed sixth in 50.80.

In the sprints, freshman Roy Monson (Stoneham, MA) placed in a tie for fourth in the 55 meter dash in 6.64 seconds while freshman Kyle Medolo placed eighth (fourth) in the 200 meter dash in 23.11 seconds.

Freshman Eric McDonald (Groveland, MA) placed sixth overall (second) in the mile with a time of 4:21.47.

UMass Lowell enters the Harvard Invitational next Saturday.
