Abraham Lincoln Bicentential Visits Lowell

Nov. 20, 2008

LOWELL, MA - Children from the Abraham Lincoln school visited one-of-a-kind "Abraham Lincoln: Self Made in America" mobile exhibit touring the nation in honor of the school's namesake's bicentennial.

The mobile museum will be parked at the Tsongas Arena from Thursday, November 20 to Friday, November 21, where people are encouraged to visit free of charge. The exhibit will be open to the public on Friday from 12:00-7:00pm, leading up to the UMass Lowell vs. Providence College hockey game at 7:00 at the Tsongas Arena.

“This event provides an opportunity to connect the community with our University and hockey team in a uniquely educational way. Abraham Lincoln actually visited the city of Lowell in 1848, and we believe if he were alive today he’d be a River Hawk fan! States across the nation are hosting events to celebrate the Lincoln Bicentennial, and we’re pleased to have this popular traveling museum visit Lowell,” said UMass Lowell Athletics Director Dana Skinner.

The exhibit will travel the United States over the next two years inspiring visitors with the story of Lincoln’s life and accomplishments. The only exhibit of its type in the country, the mobile museum uses an engaging mixture of interactive elements, graphics, facsimile documents and artifacts inside a 53-foot long, double expandable trailer to commemorate the Lincoln Bicentennial.

The game will feature the UMass Lowell River Hawks and the Friars of Providence College. The meeting is the second of the season and the 88th all-time meeting between the River Hawks and Friars. UML has won two straight in the series, including a 4-1 victory on October 24 at the Tsongas Arena. Providence leads the all-time series 44-34-9.
