OAKDALE, NY – Junior forward Lamine Traore scored the lone goal in the 60th minute to lead No. 9 Dowling College over No. 17 UMass Lowell, 1-0, Thursday night in a non-conference men’s soccer clash at Golden Lions Field.
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 0-1 on the year entering Sunday’s home opener against Bloomfield College (2:00). The Golden Lions improved to 1-0 and host New Haven Wednesday (7:00).
Traore scored the winner in the 58th minute when he possessed a failed clearance and uncorked a shot from 20 yards out which deflected in off the right post. Junior D Jamie Underwood was credited with the assist.
The River Hawks seemingly equalized in the 78th minute, only to have the goal called back. Sophomore F Stephen Potcner (Wilmington, MA) took a flick-on from senior F Matt Dubois (Dracut, MA) and beat senior G Nemanja Veljovic, but was ruled offside.
The Golden Lions outshot UMass Lowell, 17-10 overall and 7-2 on target. Junior G Ryan Richards (Holden, MA) had six saves for the River Hawks while Veljovic stopped two shots.
