The 1987-88 ULowell men’s basketball team finished with a 27-7 overall record under head coach Don Doucette. The Chiefs closed the season on a 10-game winning streak and captured the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship with victories over Keene State and fifth-ranked New Haven, earning the program’s first-ever berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
The Chiefs then moved on to the NCAA Tournament, where they defeated Assumption, New Haven and Alabama A&M to advance to the national semifinals. ULowell knocked off Florida Southern, 88-81, before defeating Alaska-Anchorage, 75-72, in Springfield, Massachusetts, to capture the 1988 NCAA Division II National Championship.
The national championship capped the greatest season in program history. Leo Parent was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and was joined by teammate Bobby Licare on the NCAA All-Tournament Team. The 1987-88 squad also set program single-season marks with 2,791 points, 1,039 field goals made, a .507 field-goal percentage and 638 assists.
