LOWELL, MASS. -- Voting went back and forth in the final days and hours but the votes are now tallied and the second "All-Era" team, representing the time period 1977-1987 has been selected as the celebration of 50 years of UMass Lowell hockey continues.
Over 600 fans voted in the second round of ballots, presented by Jeanne D'Arc Credit Union. The honorees names will be featured on an "All-Era" glass to be given out to the first 1,000 fans prior to the River Hawks Friday, November 4 game against Vermont.
Leading the way in voting was Mike Carr, the all-time leading scorer in program history with 134 goals and 145 assists in 121 games (1979-1983), who captured 70 percent of votes. He is joined by Craig MacTavish (1977-79), the first alum to win a Stanley Cup, with 62 goals and 71 assists in just 55 games played, and Jon Morris (1985-88), Hockey East's all-time leading scorer with 97 goals and 134 assists in 153 games played. Dean Jenkins (1977-1981), Kevin Charbonneau (1978-1982) and Ken Kaiser (1979-1983) were each within striking distance of the third spot. Â
The most competitive voting came amongst the defensemen, where Paul Lohnes (1978-1982) and Paul Ames (1983-87) garnered the top two spots, narrowly edging out Tom Mulligan (1978-1982) and Tom Cronin (1979-1983) by less than five percent. Lohnes was the first Division II Hobey Baker Award winner in 1982 and the only three-time hockey All-American in school history. Ames finished his career with 17 goals and 57 assists.Â
In net, the team is represented by goalie Brian Doyle (1976-1980), who posted a 75-23-2 record with an .895 save percentage and seven shutouts during his time in Lowell. Doyle edged out Dana Demole to earn the spot.Â
Voting for the third "All-Era" Team, spanning 1987-1997, will begin shortly and voting for each era will continue throughout the year as we celebrate 50 years of program history with Jeanne D'Arc Credit Union.
