LOWELL, MASS. -- The votes are in and the first "All-Era" Team, representing the time period of 1967-1977, has been selected thanks to the fans as the celebration of 50 years of UMass Lowell hockey continues.
"Voting was very competitive and we were thrilled with the number of fans, alumni and supporters who took part in this first round of voting," said Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Promotions
Jon Boswell. "We look forward to each round of voting and honoring these distinguished alums throughout the season."
After two weeks of voting, goalie Mike Geragosian led the way, collecting 87 percent of ballots cast to spear head a team that will be honored on the first pint glass giveaway of the season, Saturday, October 8. The first 1,000 fans will receive the collector's edition pint glass, the first of five in the series, courtesy of Jeanne D'Arc Credit Union. The glass will feature an etching of a Lowell Tech jersey from the 1967-1977 era and the names of each of the honorees.
Geragosian (1971-1975), who backboned Lowell Tech to its first ever post-season appearance, led the way. He holds the ECAC Division II playoff record for saves in a game with 63. A 1975 graduate, Geragosian was named a First Team Division II All Star by the New England Hockey Writers Association in 1975. He finished with a 34-31-1 record and a 3.83 Goals Against Average.
In front of Geragosian is a pair of standout defensemen. Scott MacKay (1972-1976) led a pool of five defenders in voting, capturing 72 percent of votes. During his career, MacKay played in 89 games, registering 27 goals and 58 assists. MacKay is joined by Gene Hayes (1975-1979), who collected 79 points (15 goals, 64 assists) during his time in Lowell.
Up front, the All-Era Team is led by Tom Jacobs (1975-1979), who earned 79 percent of the votes. One of the finest two-sport athletes to represent ULowell, in 99 games played, Jacobs scored 97 goals and recorded 103 assists, becoming one of the school's first two hockey All-Americans (1979) and also contributed to the Chiefs first ever NCAA Northeast Region tournament berth in baseball in 1979.Â
He's joined by Gary Bishop (1967-1971), who was twice named the MVP of his team, leading Lowell Tech in three of his four seasons, tallying 76 goals and 80 assists in 80 games, and Steve Woods (1971-1975), who graduated from Lowell Tech as the program's all-time leading scorer with 160 points (77 goals, 83 assists).
Voting for the second "All-Era" Team, spanning 1977-1987, will begin shortly and voting for each era will continue throughout the year as we celebrate 50 years of program history with Jeanne D'Arc Credit Union.
