LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell freshman goaltender
Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) has been named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week after stopping 42 of 44 shots (.955 sv%) with a 1.20 GAA, as the River Hawks swept a two-game weekend series against Colorado College in Colorado Springs.
Wall made 29 saves in Saturday's series finale 4-0 win to pick up his first collegiate shutout. He set the tone early, stopping Alex Berardinelli on a clean break away in the opening minute of play. The shutout came in just Wall's second career start.
The freshman had entered Friday's game at Colorado College, in relief, and turned aside 13 of 15 shots over the final 40 minutes to get credit for the win as UMass Lowell defeated the Tigers 8-5.
"Tyler stood strong," said UMass Lowell Head Coach
Norm Bazin. "I thought he was very good when he was asked to be and he was timely."
Wall has appeared in three, two as the starter, of UMass Lowell's four games this season. He is in the top ten in the nation in both goals against averaged (1.09) and save percentage (.965).
UMass Lowell returns to action on Friday, October 21st against ECAC foe St. Lawrence on Homecoming Weekend. Game time from the Tsongas Center is 7:15 p.m.
