Box Score PDF

BURLINGTON, Vt. –  Freshman Delaney Savacool (Toms River, N.J.) scored the only goal of the match in the 102nd minute of play to send UMass Lowell to a 1-0 double overtime conference victory, Sunday afternoon, at Virtue Field in Burlington, Vermont.

"This was a big one, we played with a lot of confidence and a sense of urgency," said Head Coach Joel Bancroft.  "They are kids that grind it out; it means a lot to them."

The win brought the River Hawks back to the .500 mark in America East Conference play at 2-2-1.  They are 5-8-1 overall.  Vermont falls to 1-3-1 in the conference and 3-9-2 overall.  It was just the Catamounts second home loss.

"Vermont's gritty, they tackle hard," said Bancroft.  "Our kids are constantly growing and they showed glimpses of how brilliant they can be."

The game was a scoreless duel through more than 100 minutes of tooth and nail battling, much of it in the midfield before Savacool added an exclamation point to the afternoon.

The freshman picked up her first collegiate goal early in the second overtime period.  Savacool took a crossing pass from junior Selja Snorradottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) and neatly placed it in the upper right corner from about 12 yards out.  It was one of those cases where the outside backs joined the attack and it paid off.

"We have been urging the backs to get involved in the attack," said Bancroft.  "It was a situation where they showed complete trust in the system."

Vermont had a shooting edge, 12-7, but the River Hawks outshot the home team in the second half, 7-5.  Vermont did have a 8-3 edge in corner kicks.

UMass Lowell senior goalkeeper Jill Carlson (Lexington, Mass.) earned her third shutout of the season and the eighth of her career.  Carlson made seven saves.  Vermont keeper Ally Ramos made four.

UMass Lowell returns to battle and stays on the road, Thursday, October 16 at 7:00 P.M., for a match at UMBC, in Cantonsville, Maryland.   The River Hawks will return home October 19, at 4:00 P.M., to host the University of Maine.
