Morais, Saeed lead UMass Lowell over Post, 3-1

First half goals for Morais, Saeed send UMass Lowell to the second round against LIU Post

Sophomore F Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.) opened the scoring for UMass Lowell, and junior M Majid Saeed (Woburn, Mass.) added two goals of his own as UMass Lowell defeated Post 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament.

Morais' goal came in the 25th minute on a corner kick from junior M Kyle Garvan (Braintree, Mass.). Garvan crossed the net from the left side and found Morais who headed past senior GK Errol Reid.

UMass Lowell extended its lead to 2-0 in the 41st minute when junior M Majid Saeed (Woburn, Mass.) scored off a deflection. The play developed when a corner kick from senior M Bruno Bonicontro (Marlboro, Mass.) was deflected in front of the net. Saeed was able to control the rebound and score to the top right corner.
Saeed added his second goal in the 60th minute on a pass from Homero Morais. Morais was able to slide the ball across the box to a wide-open Saeed who slipped it past the goalkeeper.

Post chipped away in the 63rd minute on a header from junior F Joe Baccielo. Baccielo was able to finish on a touch cross from freshman F Francisco Sastre, cutting the UMass Lowell lead to 3-1.

UMass Lowell and Post were even on shots with 12 a piece, and also even on shots on goal with 6 each.

Junior GK Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.) saved four of the five shots that came his way, while Errol Reid had three saves.

Sunday, UMass Lowell will take on LIU Post in the second round of the tournament at 4:00 pm.
