Lowell, MA – Rowdy the River Hawk, the beloved mascot at UMass Lowell, was injured in an accident involving a motor vehicle earlier today. Rowdy was out delivering season tickets to some of the school's loyal followers with junior goaltender Doug Carr and senior captain Riley Wetmore, according to the Athletic Marketing Department.
Early reports suggest that one of the packages fell to the ground, and as Carr reached to pick it up, a vehicle with Vermont license plates closed in. Rowdy pushed the 2
nd Team All-Hockey East goaltender to the side of the road, taking the brunt of the collision himself.
Rowdy was transported to Lowell General Hospital via Pridestar EMS ambulance and arrived in stable condition.
The mascot's status for Friday's home opening hockey game against Vermont is unknown. Stay tuned to GoRiverHawks.com for details as they emerge.
