Pat Duquette enters his 13th year as the UMass Lowell men’s basketball head coach in 2025-26 after becoming the eighth coach in the history of the River Hawk program on May 16, 2013. During his tenure, he guided the squad through its four years of the NCAA Division I transition, and has compiled an 175-188 overall record and a 88-104 mark in America East play.

During the 2024-25 season, the River Hawks fought to a 17-15 record, including wins against MAAC opponents Saint Peter's and Quinnipiac, as well as a win against A10 rival Massachusetts. The River Hawks finished second in scoring margin in the America East (+5.4) while posting a league best .497 field goal percentage. Duquette coached his players to a plethora of awards, as Max Brooks was named to the America East All-Conference First Team for the second straight year and third straight All-Defensive Team. Fifth year Quinton Mincey earned his second All-Conference Second Team selection, while freshman Martin Somerville was named the conference's Rookie of the Year and was tabbed to the All-Rookie Team. Wrapping up the awards, fifth year Anthony Blunt was named to the All-Academic Team.

The River Hawks went 22-10 overall in 2023-24 to surpass the 20-win milestone for the second consecutive season. The team stayed consistent in conference play, as well, matching the program record with 11 America East victories and a second-place finish. The 2023-24 season culminated with the squad's third appearance in the America East Playoffs championship game in the last four years. Duquette coached Max Brooks to America East First Team and All-Defensive Team honors, Ayinde Hikim to a spot on the Second Team and Quinton Mincey to Sixth Man of the Year recognition.

In 2022-23, Duquette team compiled a 26-8 overall record, setting new Division I program bests for wins and win percentage (.765), and marking the first 20-win season for the River Hawks since 2010-11. The River Hawks also collected a record 11 victories during America East Conference play to finish second in the league standings (11-5) and earn a home court advantage in the America East Playoffs for the first time ever en route to their second championship game appearance in three years. Perhaps their most impressive feat, the River Hawks were unbeatable in Lowell in 2022-23, going a perfect, 17-0 on their home floors. Everette Hammond was named to the America East All-Conference First Team, while Abdoul Karim Coulibaly was tabbed to the league’s Second Team. Allin Blunt surpassed 1,000 career points and garnered America East Third Team accolades, and Max Brooks was named to the league’s All-Defensive Team. Duquette capped off the historic season with both America East and NABC District I Coach of the Year honors. He was also selected as a finalist for the Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year Award.

Duquette led his team to a 15-16 record in the 2021-22 season, including wins against A10 opponents Dayton and George Washington. The River Hawks finished second in scoring margin in the America East (+4.9), while holding opponents to a conference best .410 field goal percentage. After the conclusion of the regular season, sophomore Max Brooks was named to the America East All-Defensive Team.

The River Hawks finished the 2020-21 season with an 11-12 overall record and 7-8 in conference competition. Duquette’s squad entered the America East Playoffs as a No. 6 seed and went on a historic run through the postseason. He coached the team to wins over No. 7 Stony Brook and No. 3 New Hampshire in the First Round and Quarterfinals. UMass Lowell then took down top-seeded UMBC, 79-77, to advance to the America East Championship for the first time in program history.

In 2019-20, Coach Duquette led the River Hawks to a 13-19 overall record and a sixth place finish in league action (7-9). His squad led the America East in scoring for the third consecutive season with an average of 74.6 points per game. The team also led the conference rankings for field goal percentage for the second straight year (45.8) and for assists per game for the third time in four years (14.44). Duquette also coached UMass Lowell’s first America East Man of the Year, Academic All-America First Team selection and two-time NABC All-District honoree in Christian Lutete.

The squad finished 2018-19 with a 15-17 overall record, setting new Division I program records for wins and winning percentage (.469). In America East Conference play, the team went 7-9 to take fifth place for the third time since joining the league in 2013-14. The River Hawks collected a Division I program-best eight, non-conference wins, as well. Under the tutelage of Coach Duquette, UMass Lowell finished the season leading the America East in points (76.8) and field goal percentage (47.2%). At No. 5, UMass Lowell earned its best seeding for the America East Championship yet. Christian Lutete earned America East All-Conference Second Team and All-Academic Team honors, in addition to becoming the program’s first ever Division I NABC All-District First Team selection.

The River Hawks went 12-18 in 2017-18, marking the fifth consecutive year with double-digit wins. In America East action, the team posted a 6-10 record to finish the regular season tied for sixth, qualifying for its first America East Championship in its very first year of Division I post-season eligibility. Duquette led his squad to a league-leading 76.2 points per game. Two River Hawks were honored with postseason awards in 2017-18, including Jahad Thomas (Williamsport, Pa.), who was named to the America East All-Conference First Team and became the program’s first ever NABC Division I All-District selection and 3x3 National Championship selection.

In 2016-17, the River Hawks posted an 11-20 overall record. In America East action, the squad finished 5-11 to take sixth place in the final regular-season standings. Duquette’s powerful offense averaged 78.4 points per game, the program’s highest average since 1994-95 and a mark that put them second in the league rankings. The team’s impressive percentage from three-point territory goes down as a new Division I program best and UMass Lowell’s highest three-point shooting percentage since 1993-94, as well. Two members of the UMass Lowell basketball team earned America East All-Conference honors following the regular season, as well, as Jahad Thomas became the program’s first America East All-Conference First Team selection.

Duquette coached his squad to an 11-18 finish in 2015-16, including the program’s first win against an Ivy League opponent (Cornell, 80-77) and against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent (Boston College, 68-66). Despite having one of the four youngest teams in the nation, UMass Lowell sat atop the conference rankings for scoring offense (76.6 ppg). Jahad Thomas became UMass Lowell’s first ever AE All-Conference Second Team selection, while Isaac White was named to the All-Rookie Team.

2014-15 was highlighted by a six-game win streak from November 20-December 3, which included a road victory at Atlantic 10 Conference member Fordham. Duquette made the most of his young roster, becoming one of just four teams in the nation to have two freshmen as their top two scorers. He coached Jahad Thomas to America East All-Conference Third Team honors, as well as an All-Rookie Team selection.

In its inaugural Division I season, Duquette’s squad hit its stride during the latter part of the year en route to accumulating a 10-18 overall mark with an impressive 8-8 America East record. In his first year at the helm, Duquette coached a pair of America East All-Conference selections, as Akeem Williams received Second Team honors and Antonio Bivins was named the league’s Sixth Man of the Year and Third-Team All-Conference. In recognition of his first-year successes at UMass Lowell, Duquette was named America East Coach of the Year by CollegeInsider.com and one of 10 finalists for the 2014 Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year Award.

Duquette came to UMass Lowell following three years as the associate head coach to Bill Coen at Northeastern, which followed 13 years as an assistant/associate head coach to Al Skinner at Boston College.

At Boston College, Duquette joined Al Skinner’s staff as an administrative assistant in 1997 before being named an assistant in 2001. In 2009, he was promoted to associate head coach and helped guide the Eagles to postseason bids in eight of his last 10 seasons, including Big East regular season championships in 2000-01, 2002-03 and 2004-05. Additionally, the Eagles captured the Big East Tournament Championship in 2001.

Duquette played a large role in developing three All-Americans (Troy Bell, Craig Smith and Jared Dudley), two Big East Players of the Year (Bell twice and Dudley) and one conference Rookie of the Year (Bell) during his BC tenure. In addition, he helped tutor five First-Team All-Conference standouts (Bell, Smith, Dudley, Tyrese Rice and Reggie Jackson), including Reggie Jackson, who was a first round draft pick by the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder in 2011.

He worked as an intern with the NBA’s New Jersey Nets following graduation and started his collegiate coaching career at Centenary at the same time. He spent the 1994-95 season at St. Lawrence and moved on to Saint Michael’s for two years, where he earned his master’s degree while helping the Purple Knights to the 1997 NCAA Tournament.

A former standout at Williams College, Duquette served as team captain in his senior season and led the Ephs to a top-10 national ranking. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Williams in 1993.

Duquette is a native of Dalton, Mass., and currently resides in Boston.
