Biography

(1977) - Lester H. Cushing graduated from Harvard College with a Bachelor of Arts degree (cum laud) in 1911, and received his Masters Degree in 1926. From the time he graduated from Harvard to his retirement at the age of 70 in June 1960, Cushing served on the faculty of Lowell Technological Institute, both as Head of the Department of Languages and Humanities and as Director of Athletics. During his 49 teaching years at Lowell, Cushing served several times as Charmin of the Faculty. he also spent a number of seasons as a coach in basketball, baseball, and soccer. Cushing, after retiring from LTI, continued to teach for 11 and a half more years, making an unbelievable total of 60 and a half years in the field of education. He joined the faculty of Leicester Junior College in Leicester, MA in September 1960, and continued there as Professor of English and Public Speaking until June 1967. In September 1967, he became a member of the Faculty of Stevens College in Fitchburg, MA where he taught a variety of subjects until January 1972. The following tribute from a Lowell Tech Alumni Bulletin indicates the mark he left at LTI: [quote]His name and deeds are enshrined in the hearts and minds of the Alumni who have been privileged to know him in the classroom, on the playing areas, and in the outer world.[quote] The 1964 [quote]Weathervane[quote], the Leicester Junior College yearbook, in their dedication to Cushing points to their great admiration and affection with this statement: [quote]Professor Cushing has continued to demonstrate those qualities of the dedicated teacher, the interested counselor, the enthusiastic advocate of all sports programs, and life in its entirety.[quote] In 1967, Cushing received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science from LTI.
