River Hawks Set To Take On 2024 Season

2/9/2024 11:15:00 AM

LOWELL, Mass. - The UMass Lowell women’s lacrosse team is excited to take on the 2024 season. With an experienced roster that features two graduate students and seven seniors, alongside an incoming class of 11, the River Hawks have set their sights on the America East Conference Tournament. The team will kick off the 2024 campaign on Sunday, February 11, against the reigning NEC Champion and NCAA Tournament participant Sacred Heart Pioneers.

Last year, the River Hawks made a competitive leap  from previous seasons, finishing with a 6-10 record, the most wins for the program since going 7-9 during the 2017 season. With an experienced defense that returns most of its starters, alongside a new look offense, UMass Lowell will look to take another step forward and compete for a spot in the conference playoffs and an America East title.

For the first time as a program, we have four full classes, two graduate students, and a normal size Division I roster. Looking back over the last three and a half years, we’ve been the youngest and thinnest team in the conference. It’s nice to see the progression. We’re starting to see some of the rewards of the culture building. The incoming freshmen class has made an immediate impact, the sophomore class is trending in the right direction, and the defense is anchored by seasoned veterans. Looking forward to getting started with this group.

2024 Captains Release

The River Hawks will look to their five captains for leadership: Caroline Klim (Wrentham, Mass.), Julia Napolitano (Oakdale, N.Y.), Emerson Laundry (Swampscott, Mass.), Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) and Elsa Skinner (Annapolis, Md.). The two graduate students, Klim and Napolitano, who have been at UMass Lowell now for four years, have been instrumental in helping develop the culture of the program.

Caroline and Julia, our fifth years, have been with us since the beginning. They have matured, have good confidence, communicate well, and are perpetuating what the graduating class of 2023 began. Think they're going to have a great year on the field.

Although the offensive unit is primarily underclassmen, the River Hawks return their two top scorers from the previous season in junior Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) and senior Megan Brockbank. Catlin’s 2023 efforts were one for the record book, ranking third in program history with 48 total points off 29 goals and 19 assists, which both also rank top-10 in the young program’s history. Meanwhile, Brockbank finished her junior year with 35 points off 24 goals and 11 assists. The senior currently ranks fourth in UMass Lowell history in total scoring, sitting at 93 points, 30 behind the all-time leader.

On the defensive side, the River Hawks return all starters, including seniors Emerson Laundry, Rylee Kelly (Harwood, Md.), Kiley McCarthy (North Reading, Mass.), and junior Daia Hansford (Bowie, Md.) alongside the graduate student pairing of Klim and Napolitano. The group proved reliable, as they combined to miss only one game, while all finishing top six on the team in ground balls and caused turnovers.

Coach Rippey’s defensive unit is a strength. Rylee (Kelly) has developed into an excellent one-on-one defender, Daia is an outstanding on and off-ball player, and Elsa, who transferred from a community college in Baltimore is smart and steady. Julia and Caroline anticipate, communicate, clear and groundball very well. The defensive unit has eight players who are interchangeable and fun to watch. Think they are more than capable of bringing a young midfield unit up to speed and compensate for any youthful error.

With four goalkeepers on the roster, senior Jillian Schumacher (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), junior Kendall Whalen (Belmont, Mass.), sophomore Hannah Shaddock (Corning, N.Y.), and freshman Alexa Kuhn (Rocky Point, N.Y.) are competing for the role of the starting goaltender. Last season, Shaddock made an impact immediately in her first year, as she was named the America East Rookie of the Week in the first two weeks of the season. After starting in all 16 games and finishing with 135 saves, the New York native was tabbed to the America East All-Rookie team following the conclusion of the regular season.

A rising tide raises all boats, and the America East is rising. Our conference opponents surged in NCAA RPI rankings, as did we, and performed well in our non-conference schedules. We look forward to great conference competition in 2024 and beyond.
