River Hawks Fall to Brown, 2-1

LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore Iñaki Esnaola tallied his second goal of the season as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (2-7-2) fell to the Brown Bears (4-4-3), 2-1, on Tuesday night.

"We played a lot of guys tonight," said head coach Kyle Zenoni. "We wanted to give them a look and give them a run. Tonight we fought hard. Again, we're showing good progress, it's just giving up goals late, giving up goals early, it's kind of killed us. We're doing better, we just got to get over this hump of not giving up goals early and not giving up goals late."

Alongside Esnaola, senior Guillermo Francés Poquet (Enguera, Valencia) and freshman Daniele Mastroianni (Montréal, Quebec) both tallied a shot on goal. Sophomore Oliver Holmstrom (Gälve, Sweden) added two shots to pace his squad on the night. In net, senior Loucas Costeas (Nicosia, Cyprus) made his first start of the year, posting a save in 90 minutes of action.

The River Hawks started the game with a strong offensive presence, firing off two shots in the opening minutes, including one on target by freshman Daniele Mastroianni (Montréal, Quebec). Despite the early aggressiveness by UMass Lowell, Brown was first to strike after a blocked shot stayed loose in the box, setting up Charlie Adams, who connected for the early lead. However, it only took six minutes for the River Hawks to retaliate off the foot of Esnaola. After sophomore Oscar Perez (Sagunto, Spain) sent out a crossing pass that was headed away, the Argentina native connected on the ball midair, firing it over the head of the keeper to knot the score up at 1-1.

Following the opening two goals, the match turned into a defensive battle, with only four total shots between the two sides for the next 16 minutes. In the 36th minute, the Browns found an opportunity to strike as Jamin Gogo Peters found an open look, but an excellent save by Costeas kept the board even. The River Hawks added a shot in the 45th minute, but the two sides would head into the break all tied up.

Only three minutes into the second half, the River Hawks created a chance to take the lead when a throw-in from senior Denis Petro (Michalovce, Slovakia) set up Francés Poquet with an opening just outside the box. The senior ripped a shot at the net, but the Brown goalkeeper was able to catch it to keep the hosts from taking the lead. The defenses kept each offense at bay, with neither side finding a shot on goal until the final ten minutes.

The difference maker came with only 9:49 remaining on the clock, as Charlie Adams connected on his second goal of the night, this time from only 10 yards out. The River Hawks didn't let up, consistently pushing the ball down the field, but they coudln't find the equalizer, sealing the 2-1 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks will hit the road for a conference match against the UAlbany Great Danes on Saturday, October 14. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Bob Ford Field.
